EMDR
Birth trauma therapy in Newton Abbot and online. I specialise in supporting clients who have experienced trauma, no matter what form it takes. Trauma is deeply personal and doesn’t always stem from what we expect, like an assault or car crash—it can also arise from events like a difficult birth, unexpected loss, or relationship breakdown. I offer EMDR therapy, a proven approach to healing trauma, and have a particular focus on supporting women and families in the perinatal period. If your birth experience left you feeling isolated or overwhelmed, I’m here to help you process those emotions, reclaim your sense of peace, and enjoy new parenthood without the weight of past trauma. You shouldn’t have to feel distressed when recalling your birth experience. Recovering from birth trauma can be incredibly difficult. Even if your delivery seemed uncomplicated compared to others, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is an EMDR Intensive?
An EMDR Intensive is a personalised programme of EMDR therapy delivered over one or two days, rather than through weekly sessions. The process begins long before the intensive itself. We spend time understanding your history, identifying your treatment goals and ensuring you have the resources and support needed to engage safely in the work. Your intensive is then carefully planned around your specific needs, allowing us to focus deeply on the memories, experiences and beliefs that continue to impact your life today. This isn't about rushing therapy. It's about creating the time and space for therapy to happen without interruption.
Why Choose an Intensive?
Many people choose EMDR Intensives because:
- They want to make progress without months of weekly appointments.
- Their work or family commitments make weekly therapy difficult.
- They feel stuck and want dedicated time to focus on healing.
- They are travelling from outside the local area.
- They have a specific trauma, life event or issue they would like to work on.
- They prefer immersive, focused therapeutic work rather than shorter sessions spread over time.
The Benefits of EMDR Intensives
More Time for Meaningful Processing
One of the biggest advantages of an intensive is that we don't need to stop just as important work is unfolding. Longer sessions allow us to stay with the process and follow it through.
Greater Momentum
With weekly therapy, life happens between sessions. An intensive reduces those interruptions and allows us to maintain therapeutic momentum.
A Deeper Therapeutic Experience
Having dedicated time often enables us to explore experiences and patterns more thoroughly than would be possible within a traditional one-hour appointment.
Therapy That Fits Around Your Life
Many clients find it easier to block out one or two days than commit to months of ongoing appointments.
A Personalised Approach
Every intensive is tailored to your needs, your history and your goals. There is no one-size-fits-all programme.
What Can EMDR Intensives Help With?
EMDR Intensives may be helpful for:
- Birth trauma
- Baby loss and pregnancy loss
- Traumatic medical experiences
- Childhood trauma
- Anxiety
- PTSD and Complex PTSD
- Distressing life events
- Low self-worth and negative core beliefs
- Phobias and fears
- Performance anxiety and confidence issues
Suitability is always assessed individually, and not everyone is appropriate for intensive work. During your consultation we will explore whether this approach is right for you.
How does it work?
You will need:
Assessment and Preparation Session
A comprehensive assessment where we develop your treatment plan and ensure you have the resources needed for the work ahead. If we decide that an intensive is right for you, you will be issued with an EMDR Workbook to complete prior to the intensive date.
Intensive EMDR Sessions
Dedicated therapy time delivered over one or two days, with regular breaks built in throughout.
Follow-Up Assessment
An opportunity to review progress, consolidate gains and discuss any next steps.
Is an EMDR Intensive Right for Me?
EMDR Intensives can be incredibly powerful, but they are not suitable for everyone. The most important factor is not how much trauma you have experienced, but whether you currently have enough stability, support and emotional resources to engage safely in concentrated trauma work. This is something we will carefully assess together. If an intensive isn't the right option, I will always recommend an alternative approach that better meets your needs.

Perinatal Anxiety
Perinatal anxiety can occur before or after giving birth, with antenatal anxiety happening during pregnancy and postnatal anxiety in the year after. It’s natural to feel anxious at times, especially as a new parent, but when those worries become persistent and overwhelming, it can feel hard to cope. Whether your anxiety stems from past experiences, difficult birth stories, or fears about your baby, I can help. I offer support to manage catastrophic thinking and teach calming strategies to ease your nervous system, helping you feel more in control during this transformative time.

Baby loss
Losing a baby is devastating, whether through miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, or loss in the NICU. Every form of baby loss is profound, and you don’t have to face it alone. Grieving the loss of both your baby and the future you had envisioned is an incredibly personal journey.
This grief is often intertwined with trauma, and you may find yourself reliving the loss, even years later. It can feel isolating when others expect you to have moved on. You’re seeking peace, to honour your bond with your baby, and to find a way forward. While there are no quick fixes for grief, working with a specialist counsellor can help you process your loss and begin to heal. Check out the group programmes for more information on my Rainbow Pregnancy Programme.
